Traffic crossing the boundary. Unsolicited inbound attempts are filtered, and outbound connections are measured against policy — which is how activity that does not fit the pattern gets noticed.

Home firewall questions.

What is a home firewall, in plain terms?

It is a checkpoint between your home network and the internet. Every connection that crosses that boundary is checked against a set of rules. Traffic you asked for goes through; traffic that matches a block rule does not. Because it sits at the boundary, it covers everything connected behind it.

Isn't my router's firewall enough?

Most routers include basic filtering, which is genuinely useful and worth having switched on. A managed service adds maintained policy, ongoing monitoring, recorded decisions and someone to call when something needs changing. The two are complementary rather than alternatives.

Which devices are covered?

Anything that connects through the protected network: computers, phones, tablets, TVs and streaming boxes, games consoles, cameras, speakers, printers, plugs, thermostats and other smart appliances. Coverage follows the network connection, not an installed app.

Do I need technical knowledge to use it?

No. The service is configured for you with defaults suited to a household, and support handles changes. You do not need to write rules, read logs or understand port numbers to benefit from it.

What about devices using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi?

Network-level protection applies to traffic crossing your home network. A phone on a mobile connection is outside that boundary until it reconnects to your Wi-Fi. This is worth knowing rather than glossing over — protection follows the network, not the device.

Can policy be adjusted for my household?

Yes. Rules can be adapted — for example around guest access or a particular device — and support can review a recorded decision and change the policy behind it. Available options depend on your service configuration.

Will my streaming, gaming or video calls be affected?

Everyday use is designed to feel normal. Inspection adds minimal delay, though actual performance depends on your connection, your router and the configuration in place. If something specific behaves oddly, support can look at what policy applied to it.
